Pig Spirit Vessel or Funerary Object

Hollow-ware pottery pig or boar, depicted with wrinkled face and curly tail. Areas of orange-red mineral deposits are visible on the surface.

The Chinese often buried their dead with objects they would need in the afterlife. Pigs were considered a sign of high status and were typical funerary objects. Because it was prohibitively expensive, or impractical for most families to bury the dead with actual objects, replicas were used instead.
