This is a very rare piece was made 100-200 years ago from turtle shell by the tradditioan Sumbanese or Tau Humba ethnic group, an Austronesian people with distinct cultural, linguistic, and, in many cases, animist traditions. They are renowned for their Marapu ancestral religion, intricate ikat weaving, and, in areas of this remote island, the continued practice of constructing megalithic limestone carvings that are completly unique to the Sumba island peoples.
