A very wonderful example of Japanese Mingei folk art, this Daruma carving has both a modern and folk aesthetic. Starting with a natural root the artist carved only minimal portions of the piece to reveal the figure within. Finer carving brings out the intense facial expressions that Daruma is so well known for, while more primitive chip carving and large portions of un-carved stump create the cloak or robe that covers everything but Daruma's face. Some portions of cut root can be seen and look to be a feature of the piece, perhaps an abstracted homage by the original artist relating to the Japanese legends regarding Daruma's appendages. A truly special one-of-a-kind depiction of Bodhidharma (Darumua) the patriarch of Zen Buddhism.
