Wooden wall panel from the Toraja tribe of Northern Sulawesi Island, early 1900's.
Originally this panel would have been part of a very large tribal family house.
The Toraja people are famous for their unique boat shaped architecture, and for their tradditional motifs.
This panel would have been painted red, black, and white, but now it has an incredible wabi sabi patina with only small amounts of the original pigment remaining.
Spirals, along with other geometric designs, often represent the interconnectedness of life, the cycle of birth and death, and the hope for harmony among family members.
These carvings are considered sacred and are specifically placed according to social status, reflecting the Torajan people's deep respect for their ancestors and the natural world.
