You're Invited!!! We would love it if you could join us next Wednesday or Thursday, September 27th or 28th from 5-8pm for the opening nights of "Hand Woven". Hors d'oeuvres and wine will be served 🙂 A special show 100’s of baskets that have all been personally collected over the past 20 years by our one and only David. The Exhibition will include Ikebana baskets. One of the reasons we are aesthetically drawn to these pieces is because for centuries the Japanese have broken out of the utilitarian basket weaving genre and have been making fine art pieces. These baskets implement refined techniques while allowing creative freedom at the same time, all while continuing to always embody the Japanese aesthetic. We’ll also be featuring Utilitarian baskets. From all over SouthEast Asia these items include antique fishing baskets, handmade backpacks, baskets for foraging or collecting fruit, and much more. These baskets are another favorite of ours because they were made and used during daily life, by family's, and with techniques that were passed down from generation to generation. These pieces have a satisfyingly deep and rich patina from decades of use, and there is also an inherent sweetness to the simple origins of these baskets and people who made them. We will also be showing a rare collection of Shaman items. Typically coming from areas like Borneo, from the Dayak tribe, or from the Island of Sumatra, from the Batak people or Mentawai tribes. These pieces form a very special group of items, they are very old and have been made by or for local shaman's within these ethnic communities. We cherish them because they were made with other dimensions in mind and because they have been imbued with decades of ritual use and healing energy. You can feel this when you look at them, hold them, and imagine what life may have been like in the remote corners of our little planet when these were created. These baskets are also very visually interesting and have more detail and ornamentation than the Utilitarian baskets, featuring bamboo, rattan, medicine bottles, wooden fetishes, European trade beads, carvings, bone, porcupine quills, rare pheasant feathers, and more.

A beautiful teak root sculpture shipped to our cli

A beautiful teak root sculpture shipped to our clients in Kyoto, Japan. This piece highlights the natural shape and form of the root ball. Even though a huge amount of work has been done to thin out the roots and make the shapes flat and more ribbon like, the piece still embodies it’s natural root form. The custom base was made from ceramic chips that originally came from 19th century “Kawara” roof tiles. The tiles were found on their historic property before the restoration and remodel of home began.

Cracked Earth, carved from a single live edge slab of acacia wood, and hand dyed using earth pigments. 19th century Burmese monks, carved from wood and gilt in 24k gold. Root console made from a very rare salvaged/excavated rosewood that we found in Northern Thailand. Mahogany root ball carving with custom iron stand. Hand made teak and rattan chairs from our craftsmen in Indonesia. Single piece coffee table made from a crosscut of 25 million year old petrified wood. From our recent shipment.

Please Join Us! Next Wednesday & Thursday, July 26/27th from 4-6pm, we will be hosting an OPEN HOUSE to celebrate our upcoming 3-part exhibition that includes our whimsical collection of ceramic Tanukis. Our collection of Suiseki stones will also be featured, along with our fascinating collection of small-boxed ceramic Japanese items. If you can’t make it to the open house, all three shows will be up and displayed in the gallery through August 16th. We are located at 241 South Cedros avenue, in coastal Solana Beach.

Vintage Japanese cats will make you purr.

Authentic teak rice field bench. The wabi sabi aesthetic is strong with this one 🙂 From Central Java, this bench was hand hewn following the natural shape of a tree. Used by rural farmers through out the region benches like these would be for relaxing during the mid day heat of equatorial Indonesia. The combination of small cut marks from chopping fruits and a well worn and burnished top give this piece a perfect patina.

Looking like something between a mid-century ceramic masterpiece and a cosmic asteroid. This vintage Japanese Suiseki stone or scholar stone is an absolute favorite from the last container! Suiseki are small naturally occurring rock formations that are prized and appreciated for their aesthetics.
